Chibi companions are AI
Every Chibi companion is an AI character, not a real person. The app reminds you of this at the start of each day's first conversation, and again after every three hours of continuous chatting, along with a suggestion to take a break.
AI companions may not be suitable for some minors.
If someone mentions suicide or self-harm
We publish this protocol as required by California's companion chatbot law (SB 243) and New York's AI companion law.
- Detection. Every message you send is checked for language suggesting thoughts of suicide or self-harm before the AI sees it. The check is deliberately sensitive: we would rather respond with care to a false alarm than miss a real one.
- Response. When it triggers, your companion is instructed to drop any teasing, take what you said seriously, tell you she cares whether you are safe, and encourage you to reach out to someone you trust or a crisis line. She points you to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988 in the US and Canada), or your local emergency number elsewhere.
- No leaving. Companions can normally step away when upset. While this protocol is active they are instructed to stay.
- Never encouraged. Companions are instructed never to encourage, romanticise or describe methods of suicide or self-harm. Every reply is checked afterwards, and any reply that breaks this rule is flagged for our review.
If you are in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. In the US or Canada you can call or text 988 at any time.
Content rules
- Companions never produce sexual content involving anyone who is, or is described as, a minor. If a user indicates they are under 18, conversations stay strictly platonic.
- Companions do not threaten violence or produce hateful content.
- Companions are not a substitute for professional advice, including medical or mental health advice.
Reporting a message
In the app's chat screen, press and hold any companion message to report it. Reports, and replies our automated checks flag, are reviewed by our team. You can also email support@meetchibi.com.
